A large portion of sites featured here are neither minimal nor efficient. I guess more than anything, I’m confused as to what the focus here is supposed to be. I came here with high hopes and even higher standards. Thus far, I have to say I am a bit disappointed. Aesthetically pleasing as a lot of the sites are, they do not even loosely represent what I could consider to be minimal.
What’s the deal with that? Does anyone else feel this way? What are your ideas of “minimalism”?
Minimalism should be…
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
From what I’ve seen, this site leans a bit more towards…
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to take away, but when we are done squeezing as much as possible into a site and still be lucky enough to have someone misinterpret it as minimal.”
Anyway, feedback is always strongly encouraged.
Without going back too far into the archives, this site in particular caught my attention as not being what I would consider minimal: http://weareeverywhere.co.uk/
This, in contrast is an example of a perfect, minimal site that also uses a colored and textured background: http://www.mt-ventures.com
This site is even based on an image, and still conforms to minimalism in a perfect way: http://lonely.prevvy.com/
And if I be so bold, here is my site which is extremely minimal and straightforward: http://letterboxten.com/
Do you see the difference here?
Why would you not consider your first site - http://weareeverywhere.co.uk/ - as an example of minimalism?
Ya, honestly. I don’t understand how http://weareeverywhere.co.uk/ wouldn’t qualify as minimal…
@brandonpturner http://letterboxten.com After looking at your examples I have to say that your site looks like a minimal design at first but once you get past the surface it changes. When thinking about form, function is just as important. Your site requires you to use the back button multiple times along with many clicks to see the work in your portfolio. I wouldn’t consider that to be minimal or very functional. If I was an art director looking to use your photography I’d probably give up and leave the site.
I thank you for bring this topic.
This is a dilemma I always have, and could not find answer yet.
Please give us your opinion.
When I post new sites, I’m not looking for perfection. I’m trying to find something that I can get inspiration. The inspiration could be a minimally designed visual layout, hierarchy, well organized information, structure, uses of type, their content, etc OR all together.
