The ONLY difference between
The ONLY difference between art and design is context.
A lot of sites, especially
A lot of sites, especially design sites are white for the same reason a lot of gallery walls are white. Its a clean and neutral colour and doesn't distract the viewer from the work.
Sorry Paul, I don't buy
Sorry Paul, I don't buy that. I think it's a lack of people looking beyond their peers. As to the gallery analogy, you have a point. But I would say to you design is not art, and in terms of attracting work is just as often seen against the black background of a portfolio case.
Why is design not art?
Why is design not art?

Sorry, been away for a while. But seriously grow up Justin. It is a separate discipline with completely opposite aims. Design is about function - always has been, always will be. Function for art is not an integral concern.

I don't think this debate
I don't think this debate has anything to do with levels of maturity. With that said, it seems limiting to categorize art as opposite of function; as it seems limiting to categorize design as solely based on and defined by functionality. there are many kinds of art; there are many kinds of design. I don't see the problem with combining the two - or recognizing that the two can co-exist. If design was solely defined by functionality, then what is the purpose of presenting different layouts, different color schemes, different fonts? Why is there any variation at all? If the only purpose to web design is to maximize functionality - to make it easier on the user to get to the about page or sign up for program or whatever - then what's the purpose of offering a variety of form, layout, etc? Art can certainly offer functionality. Art can certainly communicate. Communication is a function, is it not? If communication is an aspect of web design, then the way in which a web design communicates can have artistic value. Do you not agree, ronan?
I didn't define art as being
I didn't define art as being without function - that would be ridiculous. I stated that concrete, hard-wired function is not integral to a piece of art and that this fact is precisely what causes it to diverge from design. Art can communicate, that is clear, but it doesn't have to; it can just be. There is, however, no design that does not have a function, it is an impossibility, a paradox.
To take your example of varied layouts, colour schemes and type - these are all channels for the message (whether it be editorial content, mechanical interaction, navigation etc), which is the function of design. Then to take your argument on communication to a logical conclusion then anything which communicates a message is art. Do you really think all text messages are art? All faxes? All crying babies are making art?
As regards art and design co-existing, why do you even suppose that one could imagine them not co-existing? They co-exist like walking and running, or land and sea. I do see certain grey areas (which would, I supose be lakes in a land/sea analogy) but they are not both art and design. If they are intertwined then why have MOMA and Cooper-Hewitt?
art requires a lot of
art requires a lot of snobbery and superfluous form for the sake of awe and ego. design is about pragmatics and practicality.
that seems a rather biased
that seems a rather biased perception of what constitutes 'art'. there are many variances and forms of art, which, I might suggest, do not all require snobbery and superfluousness - design has a practical nature, a utility - but it is also a medium for communication - in much the same way in that of a novel or a painting uses words and a paint to communicate. I would suggest that art which requires snobbery or superfluous form for the sake of awe and ego is 'bad' art. just the way design that only offers aesthetic pleasure and no practicality would be considered 'bad' design.
A designer knows he has
A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Why are all the sites white?
Why are all the sites white? Is white the only colour for simplicity and minimalism? They look nice but they also look the same.
