There’s been a lot of news about Apple building a version of the iPhone that can work on Verizon’s CDMA. CDMA is a piece of crap and it’s ancient technology. But let’s not get into that.

AT&T uses GSM which is the default network EVERYWHERE in the world. Getting a phone that uses GSM will allow the user to use the phone anywhere in the world without the hassle of having to get another phone from Verizon every time you travel abroad. In my opinion after having lived in Europe, Asia, the middle east and south america as well as the US, GSM is WAY better than CDMA.

Now, back to the iPhone. No one is sure if Verizon will accept to sell the iPhone. Verizon doesn’t play nice when they don’t have control over the phone and Apple will NOT give them the control they want. Furthermore, if the iPhone comes to Verizon say goodbye to your precious bandwidth Verizon subscribers. Verizon, or any carrier in the US for that matter, is NOT ready for proper 3G or 4G or whatever new technology that is data rich. The reason? Your beloved money: Verizon (and all the cellphone carriers) want to make money but they don’t want to invest it in making the network better. Their 5 generations old technology is not ready for the iPhone. You will feel it. Your network is going down, just like AT&T’s was. I think Sprint was clever when they back away from the initial deal with the iPhone.

(Please do not insult me by saying that Verizon has android phones and the network is fine. Android phones don’t use as much data simply because their apps suck, so people are not downloading videos, sending tweets, uploading pictures or using one of the gazillion apps that are available for the iPhone.)

Finally, on the topic of Android, say goodbye to Android phones. The reason Android is gaining in the US is because the iPhone is available only on one provider. This is not the case in the rest of the world where Android is not a player, at all. Verizon subscribers are buying Android phones because they want the iPhone and Android, right now, is the closet thing they have. But as we all know, Android is not there yet, as will never be.

So, the iPhone coming to Verizon will effectively make the iPhone the best mobile phone/platform ever designed. Full period.

The problem is much simpler: iBooks and Kindle.app are incompetent e-readers. They get in the way of the reading experience and treat digital books like poorly typeset PDFs.
