But your attention is a limited and precious resource. Those brief moments in-between active work and focus on a project are there to serve a purpose. Use these moments to help you stop and think about what you’ve been doing and what you might do next. If you fill every moment constantly fiddling with your iThingy you’re robbing yourself of the momentum and natural ebb and flow that will keep you productive.

I have been trying to be way more mindful of how I am using my few precious spare cycles. This is a great reminder of what not to do.

Travel the world with a 10 pound or less pack:

I already posted this link, but since I just came back from a trip where I saw so many people carrying their entire house with them I thought it would be good to repost it.

I also wrote tips for traveling light in the past. For this trip - a 3 day, 2 nights trip to the beach with my family - I packed:

• 2 tshirts, one of which was a Capilene fast drying tshirt used also to go into the ocean
• 2 pairs of Capilene underwear, super fast drying
• 1 button shirt for a night in the city and dinner in a restaurant
• 1 pair of jeans. I travelled to and from with them and I wore them to the restaurant
• 1 fast drying pair of shorts that doubles as swim suit
• 1 pair of Chacos
• 1 pair of simple shoes, worn in the plane and in the city
• Toothbrush, micro tooth paste, mini deodorant

That’s it, it all fit on a 18 liters backpack. I bought there a disposable razor and shaving cream and shampoo for my wife.

And since summer is going to end soon (hopefully!), here’s what I pack when I climb or hike in winter (in terms of clothing). Note: I use a lot of Patagonia products, they are light, strong and they are environmentally friendly:

• Patagonia Houdini jacket, a 3 oz soft shell that is breathable and water repellent.
• Patagonia R1 Hoody, a 10.0 oz fleece that has a balaclava style hood. It’s warm without being an overheater.
• Patagonia Micro Puff jacket, an 18 oz insulated jacket for the camp or belay or when i’m cold.
• Patagonia Capilene 3 baselayer, a 7 oz thick baselayer for cold environments
• Patagonia Simple Guide pants, 11 oz softshell pants that breath and keep ice, snow and light rain out.
• Patagonia Capilene 2 bottoms, 5 oz baselayer for the legs made out of the best wicking material I’ve found so far.
• A 2.5 oz beanie hat that is made out of fleece and wool.
• 2 pairs of liner socks, total weight 2.8 oz.
• 2 pairs of mountaineering socks, total weight 10 oz.
• A pair of La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX boots. 35.7 oz.

Total weight: 105 oz or 2.9 Kg

My backpack usually weights 12 lb or 5.44 Kg (with climbing gear on it). I go light. I go fast.
